| Diseases are extremely horrible, especially when the disease was man-made. An example of a disease that was caused by humans is the Minamata disease. While thriving to make Japan's industry more prosperous and careless reasoning, caused the people from Minamata to suffer. The disease had over three thousand victims that were affected. The reason for the disease was because of toxic chemical compound that mixed as the Chisso Corporation into the bay. It caused people to suffer from deformities, numbness, muscle weakness, narrowing eye sight, and damage of hearing. In more serious cases, the disease caused insanity, coma, paralysis, and death.
In order to progress Japan's wealth in the industry, locals of Minamata felt that they needed a factory in their city. In 1908, the Chisso Corporation opened the factory in order to produce certain chemicals needed to fertilize. Later in 1932, the company went from making fertilizer to petrochemicals and developing plastic. The factory needed somewhere to dump the waste so with careless actions, they released it in the Minamata Bay. To anyone who opposed of the dumping, the company eventually paid them off. During World World II, Japan was suffering in their industry. Surprisingly Chisso Corporation was doing quite successful and because of the success sales were going up further. During the time, the corporation was the only manufactourer that produced diotyl phthalate, which was a plasticizer. In 1956, a young girl was examined and found to be sick. She had a difficult time walking, talking, and had seizures. Couple days later, there was another victim that seemingly had the same sickness as the young girl. After a few days, there were a dozen more that had similiar symptoms. As a result, the city formed a committee to investigate what exactly was happening to the people of Minamata. It was strange but humans were not the only ones to have this "unknown disease." As a matter of fact, there were cats that go insane and eventually die. " Locals called it the "cat dancing disease", owing to their erratic movement." Also crows fell from skies and fish were found dead in the sea.
Researchers concluded that the disease had to come from a fish diet. Soon it was discovered that the waste in the bay caused the under water animals to become sick because of a certain chemical reaction. The chemical that was being produced in the factory was called acetaldehyde. As the chemical goes to waste in the bay, both acetaldehyde and mercury sulfate causes a highly toxic compound which is called methyl mercury. The word Chisso, from the Chisso Corporation, means nitrogen. They ended up releasing over 27 tons.
After being accused, the Chisso Corporation denied being the cause of the disease and continued with their production. By 1958, they decided to change their location where they released the waste to the Minamata River hoping they would be able to take the blame off them. After a couple of months the people around the river also had the disease.
"The defendant's plan discharged acetaldehyde waste water with negligence at all times, and even though the quality and content of the waste water of the defendant's plan satisfied statutory limitations and administrative standards, and even if the treatment methods it employed were superior to those taken at the work yards of other companies in the same industry, these are not enough to upset the said assumption...the defendant cannot escape from the liability of negligence"
